Engaging young people through the medium of street art

About the project

The concept of the project is to use the arts to interact with young people based in Halesowen, through the medium of street art. Using heritage, environment, people and culture as the inspiration the participants through a series of workshops will create and draft designs that will then be permanently installed on areas of Halesowen, including car parks, pavements, walls and shops. The artwork created will reflect the participants own learning & journey throughout the project and be inspired by them. The street art will cover areas ranging from a few m2 to 50+m2.

During the delivery stage of the project the participants will engage in weekly art workshops, based in Halesowen and delivered by a team of professional artists and guest artists. The participants will be split into smaller groups so that they can gain a greater level of engagement with the artists. Each team will identify several areas of the town to create their own street art installation. During the project the participants will engage in workshops with other adults and elderly community groups so that they can share their learning and develop an understanding of the issues other generations face.

Street art can be a very emotional and evocative subject, during these workshops the project will also offer the opportunity to discuss the concept and impact street art can have on a community and provide a platform for ongoing discussions to take place. This would be achieved through the creative arts sessions during which the arts facilitator would also act as a personal mentor to individual YP. Self-esteem would be raised, new skills learned, a team-work ethic instilled, a greater knowledge and understanding of their local community.

Sharing events will be held; these will include art sector professionals where we shall hold discussions about the project deliver and share learning about the project. An exhibition including images of artwork will be created by and in collaboration with the participants using their input and photos/images of the project. The exhibition will visit venues across the region over a six-month period, showcasing the project to the wider community.

A launch event for the art installations and exhibition will be held, this will include delivery team, participants and inviting various community focused people, art professionals, local authority, MP’s, educationalists, media etc to showcase the project.
